Ending Homelessness – LessBarriers

Launched Nov 2024

Read another post about homeless veterans and the VA needing to do more. See many posts on homelessness in general especially for the elderly and disabled.  Many states say they do not have the money to make and maintain facilities for these people.

Here is an idea that does not cost the tax payers out there any more money but helps all homelessness in all states.

In the US we allow all religious organizations tax free status without any stipulation that they provide for good to the communities they serve.

Why not say all religious entities will have to pay 35% taxes now. HOWEVER, they can reduce or eliminate this tax if they do 2 things (15% reduction/ 20% reduction):

1. 95% of the year they need to provide shelter to all homeless including veterans at night. 7pm- 9am. If they do not have a church/synagogue/mosque/temple building (like televangelists) they they will automatically have to pay 15%. Honestly other than adding some gates/cameras this should not cost churches much money especially after this first year of modifications it is only sharing the facilities that are not being used at night and it will save them 15% tax.  If they want to allow people to use their churches during hot southern days or cold northern winters to prevent deaths then they could do this too.

2. Provide 15% of their income to doing good in their communities ie soup kitchens, making some community bathrooms/showers, providing PO boxes so homeless have a place to put on their job applications. (Then they avoid 20% tax)

We the public would not have to pay for new buildings or any taxes. Churches could use buildings that are empty most of the time which doesn't cost them money. In the end it just makes those NOT paying taxes accountable to providing for the greater good to maintain less tax status.

This idea would need some tweaking but what are your thoughts on this idea?
